D.R. Congo possesses some of the most fertile agricultural land on the African continent. The soil is rich. The climate supports diverse crops. Yet tragically, Congo imports most of its food.
The Import Paradox – A Cycle That’s Slowly Killing a Generation
Walk through any market in a Congolese city, and you’ll find imported goods: rice from Tanzania, bottled water from South Africa, onions from Europe, cooking oil from distant countries.
Despite having land that could feed millions, Congo spends precious resources importing food that could be grown locally.
Why?
Years of conflict and instability disrupted agricultural practices. Farmers were displaced. Many were killed. Those who survived found their land poisoned with mineral waste. Infrastructure crumbled. Hope faded.
The Cost of Imported Food
When a country imports most of its food, it becomes vulnerable:
